What Soft On Crime Looks Like

While we continue to scream the politics of the subject at each other, the industry of managing crime and corrections continues in much the same ways as it has in America since the 1820s. That medieval punishment and simply locking people away out of sight reduces society’s inclination to commit crime. It is time to stop entertaining ourselves with this folly.

People

People should be central to the science of disrupting deviant and desperate behavior.

Science

Incarceration should be applied as a science-driven institution that studies – case by case – what causes crime and reverses behavioral patterns. The goal of any form of punishment should be to reform, not meaningless oppression and torture. And the institution of incarceration should be sharing its work openly with the public; exploring how best to restore all from harm, loss, and trauma.

Rehabilitate, Restore, Reintegrate

“Reentry is not a specific program but rather an ongoing process that starts from the moment an individual is initially incarcerated and continues throughout that individual’s transition from incarceration and reintegration into the community.”
-U.S. DOJ, Bureau of Justice Assistance (OMB No.1121-0329)
This is How We See it Final 6

In every bucket of our work, we are deepening our focus on old policies, and old processes, and reimagining how to spend American dollars on ‘correcting’ behavior.

1.

Was something actually done that was seriously wrong?

If not, we should stop wasting tax dollars on the theater of winning cases and refusing to admit error.

2.

What went wrong?

We should be fully and openly accountable with the applied science of understanding causation and reversing behavior.

3.

If something really went wrong, how do we address the harm?

As if we are a civil society, we should spend most time making people whole and better developing humans to live out their most productive potential.
