Join The NIA Team
The National Incarceration Association (NIA) works to help families navigate the journey of incarceration with positive outcomes, and to push innovations throughout justice systems to correct, rehabilitate, cure, and restore for greater public safety for all. Our Internship Program gives undergraduate, masters, and postgraduate students insight into the work we do as a non-profit organization in the criminal justice reform and prison reentry spaces. We hire interns for their bright minds and rely on their fresh perspectives on the issues surrounding our criminal justice system. There is no busy work or menial labor here. Our interns are heavily involved in our projects and initiatives to explore causation and end mass incarceration, while getting a front-row view of the myriad challenges faced by the incarcerated and reentry populations we serve.Gain Experience With Nonprofit Organizations

About the Program
The Internship Program is supervised by a former educator, and interns receive seminars on non-profit management and funding, data collection and analysis, public policy, and system reform advocacy. Specific tasks may vary each semester based on current projects and organizational needs, but interns will always gain practical experience with independent research, internal and external communications, and informational organization. We also tailor each intern's experience to their strengths and interests, allowing them to develop their skills while working on projects that are meaningful to them.
- Typically, interns work in the office with us one day (or two half days) a week, with the possibility of some independent work throughout the week.
- There are usually three staff plus two interns in the office, with an additional 30+ staff/volunteers working remotely and/or in the field.
- Our office is small, casual, and friendly, and we always have snacks!
Ideal candidates will be able to work both independently and with a team. We are looking for people who are punctual, professional, and organized, with strong attention to detail. Confidentiality is required. Strong research and writing skills are needed, as is experience with and/or an enthusiasm to learn databases such as Excel, Sheets, and Notion.
